Stay for a while in Stansbury

Stansbury sits on Oyster Bay, Gulf St Vincent, on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula, about two and a half hours' drive from Adelaide. It's a seaside town on a shallow, protected bay, with lawns running down to the water and a history that goes back to the 1870s, when the town was still called Oyster Bay.

Much of what makes Stansbury work is run by the community itself, from the visitor centre to the events calendar. Volunteers put on the Stansbury Seaside Markets, and the Stansbury Progress Association Inc has been looking after the town since 1910. Then there's the Dalrymple Hotel, Lost Tide Spirit Co and oysters still farmed in the bay the town was named for. That's a lot of town for about 500 people

Stansbury faces east across Oyster Bay, so the sun comes up out of the water right in front of town, and in the evening, as it sets over the paddocks behind you, the same bay turns pink. You can watch both from the same patch of lawn.

Everything in town is a short stroll along the water: the jetty, the swimming pontoon, the playground, the pub, the cafe and the shops on Anzac Parade, Weaver Street and St Vincent Street. For anything in town, park the car when you arrive and forget about it.

Visitors are often surprised by how much is open on a weekend. We're not. The Dalrymple Hotel, Peterson's Blue Lime Cafe & Deli and Lost Tide Spirit Co all trade on weekends. So do BA Fisheries and the IGA, and the Stansbury Butcher and Deli open on Saturdays. Dalrymple Motors offers 24-hour fuel. Seaside Daisy and Peninsula Records and Books open their doors too, so there's shopping between lunch and a tasting.
Hours shift between summer and winter, so check each business's Facebook page before you go.
